Dances from the Cooks Islands are the combination of elegant dancing features, step variations, and swift, demanding motion techniques of the pelvis. Cooks Islands belongs to the island of the French Polynesia. Dances from this part of the world tend to be highly exotic; they can be also combined with the Hawaiian/Tahitian dance performance, or with the Fire Show - the exhibition of the firework techniques – swinging of the burning pole (popular in Tahiti and Hawaii) or the dancing property called firepoi (from Maui).
Dances from the Cook Islands
Ajna performs the solo dances from within the area of the Cook Islands. The dances are connected with each other and consist of various parts. The first one is represented by a slow, gentle and elegant dance, telling an enchanting story about love, life of the Islanders or war. The other is characterized by the rumbling and fast rhythms of the Hawaiian and Tahitian drums, and it mirrors the technical and physical abilities of a dancer, who is necessarily performing demanding dance variations on a very catchy musical accompaniment.
Other Programme
The dances of the Cook Islands can be performed by Ajna alone or with help of other dancers from the the Trn v Oku group. We offer a dance of 1-6 dancers. Polynesian or Hawaiian dances can be made as a set of various dancing entrances of about 3-7 minutes length. The dances keep to the traditional roots of dance and choreography.
